Lyrics
[Intro] Hey, remember that time I tried to meditate, But ended up panic-Googling “why do I suffocate?” Yeah. Thought I’d figured life out - turns out I was just dehydrated. Anyway. Welcome to the show. We're working on it. [Verse 1] I set five alarms but still missed my Zoom, Texted “Wi-Fi issues,” ate fruit loops in my room. Therapist said “set boundaries,” I said “sure,” then panicked - Now I’m baking cookies for the friend I needed space from, frantic. My phone says “mindfulness,” I scroll through the app, While tweeting about burnout and eating a snack. Tried affirmations - “I am powerful” - got distracted by ads, Now I’m questioning if self-love requires better browsing habits. [Pre-Chorus] But hey - at least we're aware, We see the glitch, we just don't know how to repair. We're semi-updated software, crashing in real time, But look - we're all still here, still hitting ‘retry.’ [Chorus] Hey, we’re trying - crashing less than last week, Turned the chaos into singing, turned the "oops" into poetry. Yeah, we’re flying - well, falling with style… maybe, Oh, we’re a mess - and somehow it feels like we’re doing it bravely. Yeah, hey… we're trying. And trying counts, right? [Verse 2] I did breathwork once - thought I’d unlocked nirvana, Turned out I just got dizzy from sighing like a llama. I bought self-help books but used them as coasters, Did shadow work, then shadow-procrastinated posting the notes for it. We want purpose… with express delivery, We want vulnerability… but not too visibly. We call it growth if we cried during an indie movie scene - Baby steps. Tiny wins. No coherent routine. [Bridge] And some nights, I look up at the stars - No, really... And I swear they’re laughing. But not in a mean way. Just like… “Hey, kid, look - you’re stardust trying to remember how to breathe.” And that feels… weirdly comforting. [Final Chorus] Hey, we’re trying - glitching less than yesterday, Turning breakdowns into breakbeats, turning chaos into plays. Yeah, we’re flying - well, tumbling upward, maybe, Oh, we’re a mess - but goddamn, we’re doing it bravely. Hey, we’re trying - streaming love at 2 bars, shaky, Patch notes incoming, no manual, still human, no safety. But we're showing up. We're rewriting. We're alive. And maybe - just maybe - that’s the show, not the punchline. [Outro] We're buggy, but beautiful. Under construction, but high res. Trying... but that’s the whole point. Thanks for sticking around for act one.
Behind the Song
“Hey, We’re Trying” is the group hug after the patch notes.
Where “Patch Notes for Humans” is the meta manifesto, this track is the lived reality: the half-charged phone, the five alarms you still sleep through, the meditation app you open while doomscrolling, the boundaries you agree with in therapy and then completely abandon in practice.
The verses are deliberately mundane and ridiculous:
- missing Zoom calls while blaming the Wi-Fi,
- baking cookies for the person you were supposed to set boundaries with,
- getting lost in ads while trying to do affirmations,
- using self-help books as coasters,
- doing breathwork like an overachieving llama.
It’s not mocking growth - it’s honoring the fact that in real life, growth looks exactly like this. Messy. Non-linear. Low-battery. Full of good intentions and weird execution.
The pre-chorus nails the emotional state of our whole generation:
“We see the glitch, we just don't know how to repair.”
We’re hyper-aware, semi-updated software, crashing in real time - but still hitting retry. That’s the moral center of the song: awareness without mastery, but with persistence.
The chorus is where the compassion comes in:
we’re not “crushing it,”
we’re not “ascending,”
we’re “crashing less than last week.”
We’re falling with style, glitching a little less loudly, turning oops into poetry. Trying isn’t a consolation prize here - it’s framed as an act of courage.
The bridge zooms out.
It’s you staring at the stars, feeling like the universe is gently roasting you and hugging you at the same time:
“you’re stardust trying to remember how to breathe.”
That line reframes the whole mess - not as failure, but as a cosmic toddler learning to walk.
The final chorus and outro land the thesis of the track and honestly the whole album:
we’re buggy, but beautiful.
Under construction, but high-res.
Trying - and that’s not a prelude to the real story, that is the story.
This song is meant to make people laugh, wince in recognition, and then soften a little toward themselves. It says:
You don’t have to be consistent.
You don’t have to be optimized.
You just have to keep showing up, glitching a bit less, and staying honest.
And if all you can say today is “hey, I’m trying” - that’s already act one.
